In 2020, the 96 operational nuclear reactors in the US generated 790 GWh of electrical energy. That was almost 31% of the world’s total nuclear power output, and more than double the 345 GWh generated in China (including Taiwan). In third place was France, generating 339 GWh, followed by Russia on 202 GWh. In relative terms, France was by far the biggest nuclear generator, producing 71% of its total electricity from nuclear stations. In the US, the share of nuclear energy in the elctricity mix was 20%, representing over half of the country’s carbon-free power. China generated a relatively modest 5% of its electricty from nuclear power. |
